The life and work of the late, great Mick Lally will be celebrated on TG4’s primetime arts series Imeall tonight at 10pm and will be repeated on Tuesday at 8pm.

There was widespread outpourings of sympathy this week following the death on Tuesday of Tourmakeady native Mick Lally. Lally, who was 64, died in hospital in Dublin on Tuesday following a short illness. His funeral service took place in Newlands Cross crematorium chapel at 2pm yesterday, Thursday. He is survived by his wife Peggy and three children, Saileog, Darach, and Maghnus.

Without Mick Lally’s input and support, Druid Theatre Company might “never have existed”. So said Druid artistic director Garry Hynes, who paid tribute to the much loved actor who died this week.

DRUID THEATRE will celebrate its coral anniversary - the 35th anniversary of its founding in Galway city in 1975 - with a major performance featuring excerpts from the great Irish plays, performed by many of this country’s finest actors and actresses.

Druid will celebrate its 35th birthday this year and the internationally acclaimed Galway theatre company is set to mark the occasion in some considerable style with premiere productions and major international tours.

Galway’s arts community turned out in force on Monday evening for the official launch of this year’s Galway Arts Festival. Augmenting the large assembly of local festival devotees were visiting artists such as musicians Philip Glass and Richard Hawley, playwright Enda Walsh, and artist Ruth McHugh, all of whom feature in this year’s exciting programme.

AMONG THE many notable events being staged in Galway to mark the Volvo Ocean Race, one of the highlights is Druid’s revival of their much-lauded Playboy Of The Western World at the Town Hall for five nights only, from June 2 to 6.

Druid’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan by award-winning writer/director Martin McDonagh opens in the Atlantic Theatre New York tonight.
